The challenge

The purpose of this 3-week graphic exercise was to make a proposal of how these instrument graphics would appear on an Apple Watch series 4 based on existing brand identity

Brief

Imagine that this vehicle is autonomous - without any manual controls - and you are sitting in the back of the car, reading a book, playing with your two-year-old kid, or just enjoying the scenery. You are the owner/handler/customer of the car and you want to be able to supervise what it happening when you are on the road.

Tesla Drivers Interviews

I conducted 5 interviews with Tesla owner’s to better understand their experience with autonomous systems. Tesla’s Autopilot is the closest to autonomous experience (excluding Waymo). I asked about what they like and dislike about the Autopilot system, what situations on the road make them uncomfortable, and what’s their experience in turning the autopilot mode on and off. I also asked about their wishes and thoughts about the future of driving.

Future user’s needs

Trust through transparency

⋄ showing clearly the current status
⋄ supervising when needed but mostly enjoying the perks of driverless experience

To feel in control

⋄ communicating changes on the road
⋄ visualising objects and their risk
⋄ predicting and adapting to micro and macro changes

Right amount of engagement

⋄ understanding the car’s actions
⋄ suggesting opportunities, options to choose
⋄ seeking input when needed

The vision of the future

  1. Vehicle is not a car anymore

It is a transitory space and functions as an extension of our habits and routines, which means that cars are for living, not for driving

  2. “Feeling at home” inside

The car knows and remembers user’s personal preferences, when it comes to driving, but also about interior experiences

  3. Redefining ownership

One experience - many cars that are shared

Boarding

  1. Greeting + Requesting pick up

  2. Confirmation Destination - Users can re-route or add details about their journey that are added to their preferences

  3. Overview of the summoning process

  4. Taking control over Unlocking the car and Starting the engine

Route Awareness + Orientation

  1. The user feels safe knowing that they have access to any kind of information they need - questions about the vehicle, and it’s response to route and road conditions.
